We all know that water is good for you and if you're drinking the recommended 2 litres a day or thereabouts then you're definitely on the right track to a healthier lifestyle. But, how exactly does water improve our well being, what makes it so good for you and why should we all be drinking it?

  1. First and foremost because the human brain is 80% water, therefore keeping your brain hydrated helps to improve brain functionality and alertness. Don't drink enough and your brain has to work a lot harder to function at the same level it would if you were fully hydrated.
  2. It can help to control your weight and help to reduce weight gain. It's commonly known that in a lot of cases dehydration can be mistaken for hunger so stay hydrated and those hunger pains may not creep in quite so soon. Drinking a large glass of water before a meal can also aid weight loss as the body feels fuller sooner and therefore you eat less.
  3. Water can improve the appearance of your skin. If your body becomes dehydrated your skin can appear more dry and wrinkled than normal. Improve your hydration and you'll notice how both the dryness and your wrinkles look improved.
  4. It helps with digestion. Simply put, water helps to keeps everything moving, so not drinking enough can lead to constipation. Eating the right quality foods also has a part to play in our digestion but we still need an adequate amount of water to help this along.
  5. Detox, detox, detox. Drinking the recommended amount of water on a daily basis helps to flush out toxins and purify our bodies.
  6. Improve your energy levels. Your joints and muscles need to be lubricated in order to work properly. If you haven't consumed enough water your body will feel tired, sluggish, weak and fatigued and that's before a workout. So stay hydrated and perform better.
  7. Improve your mood. Research has shown that dehydration can negatively affect your mood, so drink more and be happy!
